Welcome to Second Grade!

 school supplies

So excited to start a new year of learning!

Reading

In order to develop strong passionate readers, please encourage - not force - your child to read for 20 minutes every night! Reading should be fun! Try to pick books with topics that interest your reader! If your little one is struggling, select books you can read together to promote a love of reading! Selecting books that are at your child's reading level is critical to their success! Books that are too easy make readers lose interest and think reading is boring, ones that are too challenging can discourage readers and mislead them into thinking that they don't like reading because they aren't 'good' at it. If you don't know your child's reading level or need help with this - send me an e-mail and we can find some just right books for your child to be reading!

Homework

Homework should look like this...

Not like this...

Mondays through Thursdays students will receive homework for math, reading, and spelling. Typically it will be one short activity for each subject. Homework is meant to reinforce learned concepts at school. It should not be a source of major stress - it also should not be taking up the majority of your night. If you have questions about homework or your child is struggling to complete assignments PLEASE let me know immediately - don't wait until conferences to share your concerns!

Spelling Word Lists

Our Spelling Program is a part of the McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders Program. There are 3 different spelling lists for each week. They are called Approaching Level,  On Level, and Beyond Level. This will allow for differentiated learning, and will allow a child to move at his/her own pace while also allowing for a child to be challenged if needed. There are 15 words on each list, and you will notice that some words are repeated the following week. This is intended to reinforce what has already been learned.
